Questions to ask your rheumatologist

So you leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis, your treatment, and what comes next.

A good consultation is a two-way conversation. You don't need to ask all of these — pick the ones that matter to you, and screenshot this page to have them handy.

About the diagnosis

  1. What condition do you think I have, and how confident are you?
  2. What else could it be, and how will we tell the difference?
  3. Which tests do I need, and what will each one tell us?
  4. Is this condition likely to be lifelong, or can it go into remission?

About treatment

  1. What are my treatment options, and which do you recommend for me — and why?
  2. How soon should I expect to feel better, and how will we know it's working?
  3. What side effects should I watch for, and what should I do if they happen?
  4. Do I need regular blood tests on this treatment? How often?
  5. Are there any medicines, foods or activities I should avoid?

About living with it

  1. Can I keep working, exercising, and doing what I normally do?
  2. Does this affect pregnancy, or planning a family?
  3. What symptoms mean I should come back sooner, or contact you urgently?
  4. Is there anything I can do myself to help — diet, exercise, sleep?
  5. Where can I find reliable information about my condition?
Write the answers down or bring someone who can. It's normal to forget half of what's said in a consultation — that's not a failing, it's just how memory works under stress.
